William Tennent Stockton, once mayor of Quincy, raised a cavalry company following secession called the Gadsden Dragoons. The party, while acknowledging the "wrongs" inflicted upon the south by the north, advocated for "pacific, rational, and judicial methods for righting these wrongs."
